I was in Waterloo by 6.30am one weekend morning to do sketches and a watercolour for this painting. I wanted to capture the amazing light and high contrasts of tone that are so strong early in the morning. The pale blues seem so delicate compared to the deep greys of the bridge and buildings. I have framed it in a dark grey frame to bring out the architecture. I have used a thick impasto brushstroke on this painting which is difficult to photograph so I have added some ‘close-ups’ here.
